| Description: | The C.E. Sundberg Company was founded in 1912 by Charles E. Sundberg, whose name the firm still bears. When the firm came into existence, it was an appliance dealership that sold door-to-door such famous brands such as Apex, Thor, and Easy, to name a few. At one time there were about 50 U.S. appliance manufacturers, today there are four. As homes became wired for electricity, the electric motor operated appliances came into prominence. These were also sold door-to-door, but with a difference. The customer had to be convinced they would not be electrocuted while operating the machine. By 1921, the C.E. Sundberg Company had grown to a chain of 13 retail stores in the Chicago land area. It was during the depression that the complexion of the firm began to change. With the scarcity of money, new appliance sales became less important, while service on existing appliance became increasingly important. Service was expanded to include all makes of washers, dryers, ironers, refrigerators, and oil burners and coal stokers, The large scope of the service operation prompted the firm to consider acting as a distributor for appliance parts. This phase of the business was launched in 1941, with appliance, heating, and air conditioning being the primary activity of the firm today. The company now has 19 locations serving 11 states in the Midwest. Early in 1962, Lawrence E. Sundberg, who had taken over the firm from his father Charles E. Sundberg, determined that it was time to sell the business to three long-term employees. These employees were Truman M. Smith Sr., Gordon McDonald, and Willard Gear. Today the firm is managed by: Truman M. Smith Jr., who has been with the firm since 1967. Kirby C. Smith Sr, who has been with the firm since 1969. Mark L. Smith, who has been with the firm since 1973. And 150 wonderful employees who all appreciate the opportunity to service you. |
